What differentiates the sonic toothbrush from the electric one?

The most basic question the people using one of the devices mentioned in this article, or the ones planning to own a battery-powered toothbrush in the nearest future, can ask themselves. In short, we can find some basic differences in design and functions of the toothbrushes:

The time of creation

soniczna vs elektryczna

The electric toothbrush came first. Manufactured in 1939 in Switzerland, it met with a positive reception of the customers and in a matter of few years it has found its way into the households across the globe. Because of the growing interest in using such devices, the manufacturers have decided to go the extra mile and create a new model – the sonic toothbrush. The first device was manufactured in 1990. Its function had a similar goal, but some of the most important functions got improved and changed.

The movement of the head

It’s the most important difference. The electric toothbrush makes oscillatory (rotating) movements and reaches 8800 movements per minute. By comparison, the manual toothbrush is able of making up to 300 movements. The sonic toothbrush cleans in a completely different way – by using the pulsating movements (micro vibrations), which, aside of removing the residue from the teeth’s surface, is also creating small bubbles actively attacking the smudges and bacteria residing in interdental surfaces. The tip of a sonic toothbrush reaches 62.000 vibrations per minute.

Built-in cleaning modes

Most of the electric toothbrushes have from 2 to 3 cleaning modes (regular, whitening and sensitive). The sonic toothbrushes are also enriched by a few additional modes – we’re usually detailing the gum massaging mode, along with the one for cleaning the tongue, polishing the enamel or the so-called GumCare (a regular mode with the added minute of gum massage).

Toothbrush heads

They differ from one another primarily in shape. The rotating/oscillating toothbrushes have round heads – thanks to them they are better at cleaning and removing bacteria. Sonic toothbrushes have elongated tips, which makes it easier for us to get them into the furthest parts of our oral cavity, and, consequently, clean it more carefully.

Which one to choose? In this aspect, the classic oscillating devices are more beneficial. They are cheaper and available at both the regular stores and big shopping centers. The sonic toothbrushes cost more, but we’re also getting a lot of equipment bundled with them: extra tips, many cleaning modes, useful accessories and a more durable battery.

The choice of a toothbrush should, most importantly, be made according to one’s preferences of brushing and budget. The electric toothbrushes are very easy to use, they don’t have too many alternate modes and the comfort of brushing is higher than in case of the regular toothbrushes. These devices are perfect for beginners, children and elderly. The sonic toothbrushes are comfortable products which are capable of cleaning teeth, whitening them, removing bacteria causing cavities and intensively refreshing, all of that on a professional level. They are outfitted with additional programs (such as pressure sensors or battery level displays), along with different cleaning modes. Thanks to them, the daily oral hygiene becomes even healthier for us.
