The toothpaste and its ingredients

pastaChoosing the right toothpaste is essential. We brush our teeth since early childhood, so the toothpaste changes as we get older. Its choice should be adjusted according to our tooth type and the eventual problems or wearing braces/dentures. The toothpaste can be our ally and doctor thanks to its whitening and antibacterial properties, along with relieving inflammations and even helping us with sensitive gums and teeth. Using the correct one will reduce the amount of the dentist visits in future, which is a huge relief for both our nerves and our wallets.

The most important ingredients and properties of the toothpaste

  • Foaming substances, aka the detergents. Made for removing the dental plaque and stop the development of the bacteria and cavities.
  • Abrasive and polishing substances, the most important toothpaste ingredients.  Their function is based around removing food remains, residue and discolorations. There are many abrasiveness levels (marked as RDA) used in toothpastes. The higher they are, the stronger the whitening effects. However, we shouldn’t use the toothpastes with RDA higher than 100, as it might damage our teeth.
  • Triclosan, is a popular ingredient of every toothpaste. It exerts antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Fluoride. Usually found as the sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate, zinc fluoride and amine fluoride.  The maximum amount of fluoride in the toothpaste is 1500 ppm. Fluoride is the basic ingredient preventing the cavities from forming, greatly reducing the sensitivity of our teeth as well. It can be used even in case of 1 year old children. How does the fluoride work? It reduces the enamel’s pH, which slows down the development of the cavity-forming bacteria, along with making the teeth more resistant.
  • Herbal extracts. They have refreshing, painkilling and anticavity properties, along with relieving inflammations and reducing the sensitivity and gum bleeding. The most common extracts come from sage, rosemary, mint and camomile.

Before buying the toothpaste, we should consult our dentist. After examining the state of our teeth, he’ll help us choose the most suitable ingredients for our toothpaste. If we’re suffering from any ailments, he can even prescribe us the necessary product. Choosing the right toothbrush is important as well – some occurrences will require us to use the soft bristles, others – hard. Armed with such equipment we can start our daily fight for healthy teeth.
