Ranking of the best toothpastes

The electric toothbrush makes 40.000 movements per minute. It’s incomparably more than while using a traditional toothbrush. Because of that, choosing the correct toothbrush is incredibly important, as using wrong products might lead to the weakening and irreparable damages to the enamel.

The current electric and sonic toothbrushes are more and more popular, with many people wondering which toothpaste is going to fit the toothbrush of their choice. Most of us aren’t aware of the factors we should consider while purchasing the toothpaste and what properties of this product are the most important.

The most important toothpaste properties

The ingredients are the key factor, along with the microparticles or abrasive/polishing materials contained within the toothpaste. Unlike the ordinary toothbrushes, the electric brushing enhances the effects of the toothpaste because of the movements being fast and intense. This might damage the enamel and irritate the gum areas. Finding the toothpaste with as little abrasive materials as possible should be the priority while choosing the product to use in tandem with a sonic/electric toothbrush.

What should we pay attention to while purchasing a toothpaste?

While looking for the most suitable toothpaste for the electric toothbrushes, we should pay attention to the RDA value (Radioactive Dentin Abrasion). According to the dentists, a toothpaste used with the electric/sonic toothbrush should remain within the 30 – 70 RDA value range. For children, the toothpaste should be more delicate, with the RDA levels remaining between 20-50.

How to choose the perfect toothpaste?

The toothpaste is one of the basic oral hygiene products. Its main functions include precise cleaning of the mouth cavity using the active substances and abrasive material, along with providing the teeth with the necessary substances they need. The toothpaste should be chosen individually. Even if these products seem similar to one another, they might differ significantly. What should we pay attention to while choosing them then?

What are the contents of a toothpaste?

Because of their contents, the toothpastes can be divided into:
– traditional,
– homeopathic,
– organic, which contain mostly the natural substances,
– herbal – enhanced with herbal extracts.

Usually, the toothpastes are mostly made out of the so-called basic substances and the additional, auxiliary substances which determine the function of the individual product. Most of the toothpastes consist of:
– water,
– abrasive substances, which are supposed to remove the dental plaque and superficial discolorations,
– foaming agents – detergents, the presence of which makes the toothpaste easier to spread,
– active substances – fluorine compounds, herbal extracts, antimicrobial compounds. Their main function is enhancing the enamel and protecting it from cavities,
– additional substances, dyes.

Types of traditional toothpastes

Universal toothpastes – these are the ones which are the most common in the stores and pharmacies. Their function is to clean the oral cavity in order to protect the teeth and gums. They mostly contain fluoride, which enhances the anti-cavity properties. Some of them, usually marked as being addressed towards the whole family, can be used by both the children and adults.

Children’s toothpaste – their functions vary depending on the age group the toothpaste is made for. They are supposed to protect the teeth from cavities and ease the gum pain while the teeth are erupting. Because of the fact that the children often don’t know how to spit out properly, these toothpastes contain the lesser amount of the certain substances (such as the fluoride). They are often flavoured and colored in order to encourage the children to the daily oral hygiene. such toothpaste should have a low RDA value as well.

The toothpastes “for special purposes”
Some of the toothpastes, aside of cleaning the mouth cavity, are made for other things as well.

Whitening toothpastes – characterized by their high (sometimes even up to 60%) amount of abrasive material, which intensively removes the discolorations from the surface of the teeth. Because of that, they have a high RDA value. Using them allows us to brighten our teeth by one – two tones. It’s not recommended to use them for longer than recommended (usually 2 months), as they can damage the enamel.

Toothpastes for the people with sensitive teeth – made for people with sensitive teeth and gums, for whom the brushing using the regular toothpaste might end in discomfort. These toothpastes contain the compounds which close the dentinal tubules (such as potassium nitrate, hydroxyapatite and strontium chloride), minimizing the pain caused by the sensitivity. Such toothpastes should have a low RDA value and pleasant taste.

Periodontitis and gum irritation toothpastes – the products of this type are supposed to ease the inflammations of the gums, while strengthening them. They should accelerate the tissue restoration while also delaying the formation of plaque. The toothpastes used by the people with gum ailments shouldn’t have the high RDA value, as it might irritate and worsen the problems. They often contain the increased fluoride dose, herbal extracts and Q10 coenzyme.

The toothpastes for denture cleaning – not all of us are aware that the dentures require the same amount of hygiene as teeth. The toothpastes made for this purpose should be able to carefully clean the dentures from food remains, without damaging the surfaces at the same time.

The toothpastes delaying tooth aging – their main function is rebuilding the enamel and protecting the gums from receding.
