Calcium – the element necessary for our teeth

20 October 2017

One of the basic elements we absorb as we consume food is calcium. It’s a key component of proper development of health and bones. Most importantly, it’s the main component of bones and teeth, which makes including it in our diet so important. It also has positive effects on correct functioning of digestive enzymes and cell division. How does calcium affect our teeth?

What is the best level of calcium in our body?

Every adult should give their organism 1000 mg of calcium every day, according to WHO and National Food and Nutrition Institute. This element can mostly be found in dairy. As it turns out, an average adult consumes foods containing only around 500 mg of calcium every day, which isn’t enough! That’s why it’s so important to monitor the calcium levels in our blood, and in case of its deficiency, consult your doctor in order to choose the best supplements.

A diet rich in calcium

The way of consumption which involves lots of products rich in calcium is definitely good for our teeth. That’s why, if you want to have healthy, strong teeth, you should mostly eat:

  • dairy products,
  • legumes,
  • nuts,
  • parsley.

If you’re not into dairy, using artificial supplements might be necessary.

A diet good for our teeth

As it turns out however, the diet best for our teeth shouldn’t be rich in calcium only! We should also include:

  • products with a hard structure (apple, carrot), which clean our mouth naturally,
  • products which enhance calcium absorption and are rich in vitamin D, such as the fat fishes (mackerel, salmon),
  • products which contain the coenzyme Q10 which protects the gums, for example, broccoli.

If you want to be able to enjoy having healthy teeth, remember to visit your dentist regularly as well. During the examination, you can also ask about a diet best for your teeth – they will answer all of your questions without a doubt.
